Smooth-cranberrybush viburnum
Viburnum opulus var. sargentii · Viburnaceae · 백당나무
How to spot it
The combination of three-lobed opposite leaves, disc-shaped glands at the top of the petiole, and flower clusters ringed by large white sterile flowers.
Look
- Leaves
- Simple leaves, round-ovate to broadly ovate or obovate, 5 to 11 x 5 to 10 cm, usually three-lobed with irregular teeth. There are 2 to 4 (mostly 2) disc-shaped glands at the top of the petiole, and leaves on the upper twigs may be unlobed.
- Flowers
- In May to June, after the leaves emerge, white flowers bloom in umbel-like cymes (5 to 11 cm wide) at the tips of short twigs; the large sterile flowers on the margin (corolla 1.3 to 3.0 cm across) open before the fertile ones in the center. No scent.
- Fruit
- The drupe is nearly round, 8 to 10 mm across, ripening from green to red (fruiting season September). One flat round or heart-shaped seed per fruit.
- Bark
- Dark gray and thick; with age it becomes shallowly fissured vertically and corky.
