Korean pine

Pinus koraiensis · Pinaceae · 잣나무

How to spot it

It is told apart from two- and three-needle pines by its five needles per bundle with one vascular bundle; and from Siberian dwarf pine and Japanese white pine by being a tree, with cone scales that curve back and wingless seeds.

Look

Leaves
Needles grow in bundles of five, with three ridges, 56.5 to 134.7 mm long. There are 5 to 6 stomatal lines on each side of the inner face.
Flowers
Flower cones appear in May on a monoecious tree; male cones are yellow and female cones are pale reddish-purple.
Fruit
The cone is cylindrical-ovoid, about 54 to 97 mm long; the scale tips curve back but do not open fully, so the seeds do not fall. The seeds (pine nuts) are triangular, wingless, and ripen in October of the following year.
Bark
Dark brown bark that comes off in irregular pieces.
