Populus tomentiglandulosa
Populus tomentiglandulosa · Salicaceae · 은사시나무
How to spot it
Leaf shape is the same as Suwon poplar, but the underside is covered with white wool like white poplar.
Look
- Leaves
- Leaves are egg-shaped to round, 3-8 cm long, with irregular tooth-like serrations; the underside is densely white-woolly like white poplar, gradually becoming bare.
- Flowers
- Dioecious (occasionally monoecious); flowers in April.
- Fruit
- The fruit is a capsule ripening in May; the fruiting spike is about 10 cm long and usually carries about 100 fruits.
- Bark
- The trunk is whitish green-gray.
Where it grows
- Native to
- A natural hybrid between Populus davidiana and P. alba that arose in 1950; endemic to Korea.
- Ecology
- Grows well in moist soil rich in nitrogen. Many suckers sprout around large trees, so planting along field ridges tends to be avoided.
